It comes as no surprise that Aguero was one of the biggest prospects in world football at that time. In 2006, the striker was snapped up by Atletico Madrid in what was called a stunning coup. The player moved to the Spaniards for around 23 million Euros which broke the club's previous transfer record. Aguero soon went about making his mark at the Vicente Calderon with 20 goals in his first season that saw him lie 3rd in the goalscoring charts.
He was also runner up in the La Liga Player of the Season. During 2008/09, he formed a strong partnership with Uruguay striker Diego Forlan as Atletico finished a hefty 4th in the division. On 28th July 2011, Agüero signed a five-year contract with Manchester City for a fee in the region of £35 million.
At international level, Aguero has also been prolific. He scored goals consistently at youth international level and was part of the squad that won the 2005 FIFA Youth Championships and the 2008 Olympic Games gold medal. He has since represented the national side at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and at the 2011 Copa America, where he scored twice in their group match against Costa Rica.
