Toby Alderweireld is a Belgian footballer who plays for Southampton on loan fom Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid and the Belgium national football team. Mainly playing as a centre back Alderweireld can be regarded as one of the best defenders in world football.
Born in Antwerp, Alderweireld moved to Ajax's youth academy in August 2004 from Germinal Beerschot. He was promoted to the first team for the 2008-09 season but only made his first team debut on 18 January, in the 4-2 victory over NEC Nijmegen. During the early stages of the 2009-10 season, Alderweireld established himself in the first team and starting eleven. Alderweireld played five seasons at the Dutch club.
On 31 August 2013, Alderweireld joined Atlético Madrid for £6,160,000 (7 million euros) on a four year contract. Alderweireld would soon establish himself in the centre of defence along with Diego Godin. In the summer of 2014 after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Alderweireld signed for Premier League side Southampton on a one year loan deal.
Alderweireld first represented Belgium at U-17 level in October 2005 and took part in the 2006 UEFA U17 Championship. After the 2008-09 season concluded, he made his senior debut for the Belgian national team in a friendly tournament. His first goal for Belgium came against Japan in November 2013. Alderweireld represented Belgium at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil helping his side to reach the quarter-finals.
