Alex is a Brazilian defender who is currently playing with PSG in Ligue 1. The player started his career in his homeland with Santos in 2002. His debut arrived in the same year and he ended up playing with other great players such as Robinho, Elano and Diego. During his three years with the club, Alex made 57 league appearances and managed an impressive 12 goals.
In 2004, Chelsea managed to sign the player but was unable to add him to their squad due to problems with his work permit. As a result, Alex was loaned to PSV Eindhoven. The defender's first season with the club saw them win the domestic league and cup double. They also had significant European success as they managed to reach the semi finals of the UEFA Champions League. Unfortunately, they were eliminated by AC Milan on away goals after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate. Alex also won further league titles in 2005 and 2006 for the club whilst making his mark in the 2006 Champions League by scoring to knock out Arsenal in the second round. However, injury kept him out of the quarter final where PSV were eliminated.
In 2007, Chelsea decided to add Alex to their squad and that aim was achieved after the player received a work permit. Nevertheless, the player was not a first team regular under Jose Mourinho or Avram Grant and made sporadic appearances in the 2007/08 season. This trend seemed like continuing in 2008 under Luis Scolari. However, the manager was sacked half way through the campaign allowing Guus Hiddink to take the helm for the rest of the season. Alex started the majority of league and cup games under Hiddink as he began to establish himself in a blue shirt. Nevertheless, injury ruled the player out for the beginning of the 2009/10 campaign. He made his first league appearance of the season in December 2009 but currently remains as back up for John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho under Carlo Ancelotti.
