Since Argentina's establishment in 1901 they have predominantly worn sky blue and white striped home shirts where the first ever Argentina shirt was all white with black socks. The first national honour was awarded to Argentina with victory in the 1921 Copa America which was followed by three more in 1925, 1927 and 1929. In the first World Cup back in 1930, Argentina reached the final where they met hosts Uruguay. However, the Argentines failed to become the first country to win the prestigious World Cup as Uruguay triumphed 4-2. Little success in the competition followed over the years as a vast majority of round one appearances followed before the country made a quarter final appearance in the 1966 tournament held in England. Nevertheless, success in the Copa America was found easier to come by as Argentina won the competition eight more times from 1937 – 1959.
The country’s first big success on a global stage came in the 1970 World Cup. However, this triumph was not without it’s controversy as Argentina beat Peru 6-0 in their final round two group stage match to go through ahead of Brazil on goal difference. This put the team into the final against Holland who equally were trying to make their mark on world football with a brand of “total football”. Nevertheless, a Mario Kempes double helped Argentina on the way to a 3-1 victory after extra time and their first World Cup victory. Despite a disappointing second round defeat in the 1982 tournament, Argentina repeated their winning feat in the 1986 tournament. Once again, the Argentines progress to the final was shrouded in controversy. After comfortable progression through the early rounds, the team met England in the quarter finals where Diego Maradona scored via a handball for the opening goal as Argentina went on to beat the English 2-1. After a comfortable semi final win, a memorable final occurred against Germany in which the Argentines eventually won 3-2 for their second World Cup triumph.
This victory spurred the country on to a fairly successful period. They won their final two Copa America titles to date in 1991 and 1993 along with their only Confederations Cup victory in 1992. The team nearly won back to back World Cups in 1990 against the odds. After scraping through every round on their way to the final, the team eventually lost 1-0 to West Germany to dash their hopes. The 1986 victory remains their last World Cup success to date as several quarter final appearances has been their best effort since 1990. However, the country’s youngsters have blossomed at the previous two Olympic games winning on both occasions. The likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez have used the stage to progress into the actual Argentina national squad for the world tournaments.
