Nicknamed ‘Los Colchoneros’, Atletico Madrid wear shirts that are striped red and white. Their kit manufacturer is Nike while their principal sponsor is Plus 500. Some of the famous names under the red and white shirt include the successful 2013-14 Atletico side composed of the likes of David Villa, Diego Costa, Filipe Luis, Koke, Arda Turan, Diego Godin and Thibaut Courtois.

Atletico Madrid were founded in 1903 and they have used their trademark red and white striped home jerseys since 1911. The club’s first colours were blue and white much like Athletic Bilbao’s shirts at the time. It was rumoured that the club switched to red and white from blue and white as it was cheaper to make because the same combination was used to make bed mattresses.

Other plausible reasons include that Atletico Madrid were using Blackburn Rovers kit at the time. Former player Juanito Elorduy went to England to buy kits for both Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid teams and he ended up buying Southampton’s kits which featured red and white stripes. Atletico Madrid kept Blackburn Rovers blue shorts which led to their nickname ‘Los Rojiblancos’.

Atletico Madrid 23/24 Home Kit

Atletico Madrid reverted back to a simple iteration of their traditional design for their 2023/24 Nike home kit. The body showcased a no nonsense presentation of the red and white vertical stripes typical of past Atleti home shirts. The raglan sleeve cuffs in between the round neckline and the sleeve cuffs contained a solid fill of the red shade used for the bespoke striping. Simply signing off was a small Spanish flag at the back below the neckline.

Atletico Madrid Home 2022/23 KitWhile Atletico has always played with home shirts of white and red stripes, the club’s 2022/23 Nike version offered a refreshing take with its wavy orientation. The design flow was a first in the team’s kit history and took inspiration from the river Manzares. Right below the neckline at the back was a navy panel formed through the arching seam on the body and the angled ones on the sleeves. A small Spanish flag sat right in the centre of the said blue space.

Smudges of red across the jersey produce a hand-paint effect, giving the shirt its identity amongst the club’s traditionally striped home kits. The red tone used for the traditional pattern is the same shade that colours the sleeve cuffs and round collar, which has a slit at the back. The jersey and the other kits this season are part of the club’s 75th anniversary celebration of their current name.

2020/21 Atletico Madrid Home Shirt

Atletico Madrid Home 2020/21 KitThe Rojiblancos are set to wear a new home kit for the 2020-2021 season and as always their red and white identity is recognizable. The main thing aboout the 2020-2021 Atletico Madrid home kit is the alternating vertical bands of red and white, clearly a reflection of the team’s crest. The red bands resemble brushstrokes given their rough design on side edges. The bands go across the front including the sleeves. The back is predominantly red but resumes to the banded design at the lower quarter.

Unlike other jerseys, the sponsor brandings on Atletico’s home kit are not just letterings but are boxed inside a white rectangle, serving its border at the same time. The kit uses a traditional collar and is dark blue, the same colour of the Swoosh on the right chest, the Plus500 sponsor branding on the front centre, and the Hyundai logo on the left sleeve. The Atleti crest sits on the left chest area.
