AZ Alkmaar are a Dutch football team who were founded in 1967 following a merger between Alkmaar 54 and FC Zaanstreek. The club's first full season as AZ saw them finish 2nd in the Eerste Division which ensured promotion to the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football. Two years of mid table finishes followed before a disappointing 17th placed finish saw them relegated back to the Eerste division. Nevertheless, the club were promoted at the first attempt and saw their fortunes improve in the Eredivisie.

Dutch club AZ Alkmaar is one of the Nike teams to adopt the Strike II Teamwear template, applying it on the club's predominantly black away shirt for 2021/22. As such, the secondary outfit displays a solid fill for the body and a grey 'Vaporknit' texture on the raglan sleeves. It also has a simple round collar to complete the incorporation of the Strike II arrangement.

The 1976/77 season saw AZ achieve their highest finish in the top division after coming third. The club started to move forward and won their first silverware the following year with victory in the Dutch Cup. In 1980, the club embarked on a memorable campaign with a league and cup double. The team retained the cup the following year but it was to be their final success for some time as performances dramatically dropped.

The 1987/88 campaign saw Alkmaar relegated to the Eerste division for the first time in sixteen years. It was eight years before they embarked on a revival with promotion in 1996. Even so, the club were relegated on their first season back but managed to bounce straight back with a first placed finish in the Eerste division. Numerous mid table finishes followed until a 5th placed finish in 2004 ensured UEFA Cup qualification.

This milestone seemed to be the catalyst for another bright period in the club's history. The following three campaigns saw top three finishes achieved although no silverware was won. An 11th place finish in 2008 was merely a dip as Alkmaar stormed to their first Eredivisie title in 28 years during 2009. As a result, the club qualified for their first ever Champions League campaign. Although they competed well, they ended up finishing bottom of the group stage.
