Bale made his competitive debut for Spurs against Manchester United and in his second appearance he scored his first goal for the club in a 3-3 draw with Fulham. Bale developed a habit of scoring free kicks at the club where one of his best was against Arsenal in the North London derby in his first season at the club. In his first three seasons at the club he was mostly deployed in the left back position. His career took off when he played more in an attacking role in the left wing position where he scored 12 goals in the 2010-11 season.
Bale progressively improved from season to season where he scored 45 goals and made 27 assists in 101 matches for Spurs in his last two seasons at the club. This prolific form would see Bale win the 2010-11 and 2012-13 PFA Player of the Year and several other prestigious awards.
After Spurs failed to qualify for the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League Bale looked for a move away from Tottenham and he would be linked with several high profile clubs around Europe including Real Madrid and Manchester United. Gareth Bale broke the world record for being the most expensive footballer in history after he signed a six year deal at Real Madrid for £84.7 million in 2013. This deal broke the previous record of £80 million held by Real Madrid team mate Cristiano Ronaldo. Bale was assigned the number eleven shirt previously worn by Ricardo Carvalho who had departed to AS Monaco on a free transfer.
