Karim Benzema is a French striker who currently plays for Real Madrid in La Liga. The player spent the majority of his youth career with Lyon and eventually made his debut for the club in January 2005. Five days later he signed a three year professional deal with the team. His appearances over the following two seasons were fairly restricted with only 34 appearances and six goals.
At the beginning of the 2007/08 campaign, Benzema was handed the role as the club's lead striker following several departures. He has a phenomenal season with 31 goals in 51 matches. As a result, the striker signed a contract extension to 2013 which reduced rumours of moves to Manchester United and Real Madrid. 2008/09 was another impressive goalscoring year for Benzema that saw him manage 17 league goals despite Lyon underperforming in the league.
In July 2009, it was announced that the striker had agreed a move to Real Madrid for 35 million Euros. The player has performed fairly well so far with seven goals in 19 league appearances. The striker has also represented France at numerous levels. In 2007, he made his debut for the full national team and scored in the 1-0 victory over Austria. His next two goals arrived in the 6-0 win against the Faroe Islands before a disappointing showing at the 2008 European Championships. To date, he has managed eight international goals during his 27 caps.
