Middlesbrough is an English side based in a town of the same name. They were one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992, but also one of the first ones to get relegated from it after the 1992/93 season. Boro play their home games in the 30,000-seater Riverside Stadium. The club’s colours for their home kits are mainly red with white accents, with no traditional design in particular. While the club has proven it can be top-flight side, it has also spent significant periods playing in the lower tiers of English football.

Middlesbrough 23/24 Home Shirt
2023/24 brought another twist to the interpretation of the traditional Boro style of a white chest band on a red base. The Errea-produced home shirt for the season opted instead for two white stripes running equidistant to each other to make up for the band and act like borders to the sponsor space. It did bring up some memories of the 2001/02 home, only that the old kit used equidistant pinstripes and that the top one also continued up to the sleeves. Also in white was the collar, which only flowed to the sides and back. Navy coloured the small strip of panel connected to the front side of the neckline as well as the base of the sleeve cuffs, which further had a tri-striping of white-red-white on the outer side before fading out to the base toward the inner side.

Boro’s 2023/24 Errea change shirt was predominantly navy with yellow accents. The secondary colour detail emanated mainly from the chest band, which had white pinstriped border and also one across the middle that was interrupted by the presence of the crest. With the sponsor logos going above and below the crest, the kit completed a central placement for the liveries of all stakeholders. Other yellow details included the v-collar, the pinstriped trim on the sleeves and the prominent sleeve cuffs. Middlesbrough’s foundation year ‘1876’ signed off at the back below the collar on a small white font.

2022/23 Middlesbrough Home Shirt
Boro’s move back to Errea beginning in 2022/23 produced a red shirt with the bespoke white chest band design. The red base had a clean application accented by the other white details like the buttoned Chinese collar and sleeve cuffs. It was a relatively clean and simplistic look compared to other home kits that had come before.
2021/22 Middlesbrough Home Shirt
The Middlesbrough 2021/22 home shirt placed the iconic Transporter Bridge at the centre of its design. The predominantly red jersey used a tonal graphic application on the main body to depict the said landmark, a nod to the promotion-winning 1994/95 shirt which also contained a visual of the bridge. The sleeves had a solid fill and white underarm panels that flowed seamlessly to the body as a broad horizontal band on the sponsor space. The collar was solid red on the front and white with red pinstripes on the rear.

Middlesbrough’s 2022/23 Errea away had a navy base designed with brushstroke-like visuals in light cyan. The graphics adorned the front and the sleeves in an abstract, semi-hoop pattern. Round collar and sleeve cuffs in white with decent height for visibility joined the white mesh panel on the sides to complete the jersey.
2021/22 Middlesbrough Away Shirt
The Middlesbrough Hummel away shirt of 2021/22 featured a dark pine green base free of any design to highlight the white logos and the gold details, such as the kit maker’s trademark shoulder and sleeve chevrons and the team crest. The colour combination took inspiration from the ’94/’95 away kit, their last green away jersey before this edition.
Middlesbrough was established in 1876, but they only permanently turned professional in 1899. Upon election to the Football League in the same year, Boro actually wore white shirts with blue shorts before adopting red and white later in the season. The colour theme has remained as such ever since.
An interesting occurrence happened in Boro’s final game in the 2005/06 Premier League season against Fulham. In the said match, 15 out 16 squad members were from the local area and, with Josh Walker entry to the field in the 62nd minute, all 11 players were born within 30 miles of Middlesbrough (not to mention all being graduates of the club’s academy). The starting XI also recorded the youngest-ever starting lineup in Premier League history and became the first all-English starting lineup since Bradford City in 1999.
There are an interesting mix of famous Boro fans with names such as comedian and actor Bob Mortimer, Sky Sports commentator Chris Kamara, musician Chris Rea, former MI5 officer David Shayler , Diane Youdale who played Jet in Gladiators and Channel 4 Racing presenter Derek Thomson.
