Chivas is the nickname of C.D. Guadalajara, a football club based in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area of Jalisco, Mexico. They are one of the founding members of the Mexican top-flight Primera División. The almost 50,000-capacity Estadio Akron serves as the club’s home ground. Aside from Chivas, C.D Guadalajara are also known as the Rebaño Sagrado (Sacred Herd) and the Rojiblancos (Red and Whites).

Puma opted for a subtle change in 2023/24 for the home shirt of Chivas. Maintaining the red and white striped look, the kit seemed to be like just any other Chivas home shirt from the past. But a closer inspection revealed that the red stripes flanking the central one were curved that made them look like a pair of horns. It was a hitting two birds with one stone-keeping the traditional design while doubling down on their ‘goat’ identity. Navy accents from the sleeve cuffs and collar fulfilled the bespoke colour prerequisites.

Chivas combined a blocked design and stripes for their 2023/24 Puma away. From top to bottom, white covered around three quarters of the space including the sleeves. This was followed by a red band and the remaining was finished off in navy. Also in navy were the sleeve cuffs and v-collar. The white section had red horizontal stripes, while the navy area contained relatively lighter toned-blue ones.

Chivas usually don red and white stripes with blue accents for their home shirts. The colours symbolise ‘Fraternity’, ‘Union’ and ‘Sports,’ and are thought by historians to be influenced by the tricolours of the French flag or the flag of Bruges City in Belgium (which is more probable considering founder Edgar Everaert hailed from the said city).

With multiple league and cup titles, plus a few continental ones, Chivas is one of the most successful football club in Mexico. So far, Chivas comprise those few teams which have never been relegated. In a 2016 study, Chivas ranked first as the most popular football club in the country.

The likes of Javier Hernández, Carlos Vela and Carlos Salcido, among others, were some of the home-grown (cantera) players that prospered in Chivas and went on to have successful careers outside Mexico.
