Revived in 2010, the New York Cosmos were orignially a North American Soccer League team during the 1970s and 1980s, with players including Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer in the twilight of their careers.
New York Cosmos shirts were designed by Ralph Lauren from 1979 until the NASL folded, when the clubs revival was announced in 2010, Umbro were on board to create the new NY Cosmos shirts. The latest incarnation of the team has stuck with the club's kit colours, the home kit white with green details and the away, green with white details.

In 1971, the Cosmos initial kit was all green with yellow trim, in an attempt to lure Pele to the club using Brazilian national team shirt colours. When he did not arrive, the kit was changed to all white in an imitation of his club Santos, with the green shirt becoming the away jersey.
The club's returned in 2010, with the aim of becoming an MLS franchise in the near future, former player Pele announced the news in August 2010 and in January 2011, Eric Cantona was revealed as Director Of Soccer, Pelé will be Honorary President.
