Lassana Diarra is a defensive midfielder who is currently playing for Lokototiv Moscow in Russia. The French midfielder began his career in his homeland with Le Havre who was in the second division. Diarra made his debut for the club in 2003 and put in a series of impressive performances during his two years. After just 29 league appearances, Chelsea paid £1 million for his services and dubbed him the new Claude Makelele.
In his first season, Diarra did not get much first team football at Chelsea. He was mainly utilised in the reserve team where he learnt his position to a greater degree. In 2006/07, the player filled in a right back on numerous occasions due to defensive injuries. However, there were rumours that Diarra was in pursuit of first team football. At the end of the campaign, the young midfielder moved to Arsenal for an undisclosed fee. Nevertheless, Diarra did not make the amount of appearances that he would have expected to due to the emergence of Mathieu Flamini in the same position.
After only five months at the club, the player moved to Portsmouth for around £5.5 million. The midfielder finally got his wish of first team football and played every match en route to Portsmouth winning the FA Cup. As a result, he reached the French squad for Euro 2008 and also scored during Portsmouth European campaign the following season. Nevertheless, in December 2008, it became apparent that Real Madrid had lodged a sizeable bid for Diarra's services. In January 2009, the player moved to the club for around £19 million. The midfielder impressed initially for the club and managing to keep his place despite all the summer upheaval with the likes of Ronaldo and Kaka arriving, but he moved to Anzhi Makhachkala in 2012 then to Lokomotiv Moscow in 2013.
