The English Premier League have announced that their name will be officially be the Barclays Premier League. Previously it was the Barclays Premiership in the UK and the Barclays Premier League in the rest of the world.This is designed one assumes to increase brand recognition and make it easier for fans wherever they are to associate with the competition.
In a statement the Premier League said they had taken the decision after extensive research with fans and other important stakeholders, which found a need for an emphasis on a single unified identity.
Robert E. Diamond Jr, Barclays President said:
“We’re delighted to be the title global sponsor of the Barclays Premier League because of its huge appeal among fans across the world.
“Introducing a single name for the competition presents our brand in a consistent way across the world.”
Richard Scudamore, Chief Executive of the Premier League said:
“We are confident that our simplified and strengthened global identity will help fans associate better with our fantastic competition.”
