Release of Pink Everton Shirt a success
Everton FC has been overwhelmed by the success of the recent release of the specially commissioned pink replica shirts. Monday March 17th saw a limited release of 1000 shirts at various retail outlets, with 10% of each sale being donated to the Breast Cancer Campaign. The shirts proved to be a huge hit with fans, the last few being sold out early on Tuesday morning.
A small number of the shirts were first commissioned for Everton’s second annual Ladies Day in October 2007, with £10,000 being raised on the day for breast cancer awareness. Since then there has been an extraordinary amount of interest in the shirts, leading the Premier League to grant permission for the recent sale of 1000 further shirts. Following the success of the latest release, Everton are investigating the possibility of releasing a further batch at some stage in the near future.
“As expected the shirts have proved a hit with Evertonians,†said Ian Ross, Head of Public Relations at Everton, “It was always our intention to make only a limited number available but we will be talking to our retail partner about the possibility of a securing a further batch.”
He also commented on the club’s disappointment at learning that some of the shirts have been made available for sale on the internet, barely a few hours after going on general sale, saying “Frankly, we are dismayed that these shirts are now being sold for profit on the Internet. This is a fantastic fund raising initiative for the Breast Cancer campaign and to learn some people have attempted to make money for personal gain is disappointing.â€
The Everton website is auctioning off one further shirt, signed by the whole first team squad, with all the proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Campaign.
I live in Melbourne, Australia and fell in love with the beautiful game after watching the 2002 World Cup. I’m a passionate Tottenham Hotspur supporter and a regular follower of the Socceroos. Besides these specifics, I’m a huge fan of just about everything to do with football.
Mint! Good 4 u!
I think this is a great idea. Here in Osaka, ‘feminine’ versions of the local baseball team’s shirt design are available in pink, and are worn by thousands of female supporters even though the players obviously wear a different colour. If this concept can be combined with raising funds for a really good cause, then it is an excellent initiative. Good for Everton!
Make it the third kit next year, then every time they wear it they donate money to charity. Simple!
