Udinese Announce Dacia Shirt Sponsorship

Udinese are an Italian club playing in the top division, the Serie A. They are also known as the zebrette (little zebras) or the bianco-neri (white-blacks), due to their traditional home colours. The team ranked 7th in last season’s table, and hence qualified for the UEFA Cup First Round. They qualified to the group stage and won their Group D with 3 wins and a loss. They will now face Polish club Lech Poznan in the knockout stage. If they progress, they will face the winner of the match between Zenit and Stuttgart. As at the 17th matchday, they sit in a mid-table 12th position with 22 points, 20 points behind league leaders Inter.

Shirts for the Zebrette are manufactured by Italian sportswear company Lotto, and do not have a sponsor. The above is the current home shirt used for matches played in the Stadio Friuli. Udinese have now officially announced that they have reached an agreement with Romanian car manufacturers Dacia for the sponsorship of their shirts. Dacia is owned by French giant car-maker Renault, and is the only low-cost brand in the car industry. The shirt with the sponsor was used for the first time in the match between Milan and Udinese, which ended 5-1 to Milan.

Both Renault Italia and Udinese were delighted with the deal and look forward to reaping its benefits. The comments from the two institutions were (translated from Italian):

“For us, this sponsorship agreement represents the opportunity to have an important showcase, given by a football championship of the highest grade, to increase the popularity of Dacia in the Italian market. It is the opportunity to make the brand known to a vast population: a young brand which is already registering important commercial success and a strong expansion in these difficult times for the Italian car industry.”Andrea Baracco, Commercial Director of Renault Italia

“Research that provides maximum results for the costs incurred always characterised the philosophy of the Pozzo family [Udinese owners] and of the Udinese squad. Thus, for us it is great satisfaction sharing this philosophy with Dacia, a young and dynamic brand which distinguishes itself in the car industry with the low-cost strategy. In the football world, Udinese has distinguished itself as a leading model for many years, both in Italy and in Europe, above all for the ability to scout upcoming potential talents to wear the Udinese shirt, to increase their value and construct a solid squad composed of valuable elements with the ability to obtain the best results and compete on the same plain with big clubs from Italy and Europe.”Pietro Leonardi, Director of Udinese FC

The home shirt is pretty cool. The narrow stripes reminds me of when Juve used to wear good shirts in the seventies and eighties, rather than the God awful Nike trash they are stuck with nowadays..
