FC Rostov was founded in 1930 initially named Selmashstroy. They were then renamed Selmash in 1936 then Traktor in 1941. In 1958 they were renamed Rostelmash. In 2003 they renamed the club to its current name FC Rostov.By the early 1970s the club was back in the Russian leagues. In 1991 the club finished fourth in what was the final season of Soviet football following the USSR's disintegration.
FC Rostov play their home games in yellow and blue. They play their football in the Olimp - 2 Stadium, Rostov-on-Don which holds 15,842 seats. Former Tottenham Hotspur player David Bentley signed for the club on loan for the 2012-13 season.
