Seamus John James 'Shay' Given was born 20 April 1976 in Lifford, Ireland. He is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and with over 120 international caps he is a member of the FIFA Century Club.
Given was trained in his youth at the Celtic academy. In 2004 he joined Blackburn Rovers of England but would only appear for their senior side twice but did enjoy more game time on loan spells to Swindon Town and Sunderland. His career really kicked off when he was signed to Newcastle United by manager Kenny Dalglish in 1997. He immediately became the first choice shot stopper for the Tyneside club and went on to rack up a massive 462 appearances for the Magpies over 12 years. Whilst at Newcastle, Given played in the UEFA Cup, UEFA Champions League and two FA Cup Finals.
On the first day of February 2009, Manchester City signed Given for a fee of £7 million. A Man of the Match performance on debut helped City win 1-0 against Middlesbrough. Given captained the side when Kolo Toure was away with the Ivory Coast on international duty. A dislocated shoulder in April 2010 ruled him out for the rest of the season. The next season Joe Hart became the number one choice goalkeeper which made Aston Villa's approach for him an easy one to accept.
Given is the most capped player for the Republic of Ireland. He has twice made the Premier League team of the season (2001/02 & 2005/06). After losing his mother to cancer when he way only five years old, Given has supported Macmillan Cancer Support by organising Fashion Kicks fundraising events. Given has maintained high standards during his long career and most recently helped the Republic of Ireland qualify for the Euro 2012 Championships.
