Ilkay Gundogan is a German footballer who plays for Borussia Dortmund and the German national team. Gundogan was a central figure in Borussia Dortmund's 2011-12 Bundesliga campaign and he is most notably known for being a playmaking central midfielder with world class passing and technical abilities.
Gundogan was born on the 24th of October 1990 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany and he made his professional debut playing for VfL Bochum B side in 2008. In 2009 Gundogan moved to 1. FC Nurnberg and his first goal for the club came against Bayern Munich in February 2010. In May 2011 Gundogan signed for Borussia Dortmund.
Signing a four year contract Gundogan has been prolific since joining the German outfit where he helped the club to win the 2011-12 Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles winning the double. Individually Gundogan won the European Sports Media's European Team of the Season for the 2012-13 season plus he also won the 2012-13 Goal Award: Best 35; Player in the World.
Having played for Germany at youth levels Gundogan ad he made his senior debut for Germany in October 2011 in a 3-1 win against Belgium in a UEFA Euro 2012 Qualifier. Gundogan scored his first international goal against Kazakhstan in a 4-1 win in March 2013. Gundogan looks to be a key player for Germany in future years and may be seen as a long term replacement for Bastian Schweinsteiger.
