Luiz Gustavo Dias is a Brazilian footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for VfL Wolfsburg and the Brazil national team. Born on the 23rd of July 1987 Luiz Gustavo is most notably for his world class tactical awareness, distribution and tackling abilities.
Luiz Gustavo began his footballing career at Brazilian club Corinthians Alagoano in 2007 where he made two loan moves to CRB and German club 1899 Hoffenheim. In 2008 Gustavo signed a permanent deal with Hoffenheim where he played three seasons before signing for German giants Bayern Munich in 2011.
Signing for 15-20 million euros Luiz Gustavo made his debut for the club against his current club VfL Wolfsburg in a 1-1 draw. He scored his first goal for the club in a 5-2 loss to Borussia Dortmund. Luiz Gustavo played in the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League Final against Borussia Dortmund helping the club to victory. He also helped the club to win the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal title in the same season. The arrival of Javi Martinez in 2013 meant Luiz Gustavo would receive less match time resulting in a move to VfL Wolfsburg in August 2013.Luiz Gustavo signed a long term contract at the club which would run out in 2018. Gustavo made his Brazil debut in August 2011 in a friendly match against Germany and he was a member in the squad which won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup where they defeated World Cup champions Spain 3-0 in the final. He scored his first international goal against Australia in September 2013. Gustavo looks to be a regular squad member in Brazil in the next few years.
