Javier Hernandez is a Mexican footballer who plays for Bayer Leverkusen and the Mexico national football team. Having falled down the pecking order at Manchester United Hernandez opted to sign a one year loan deal with Spanish giants Real Madrid before moving to Germany in the Budesliga with Bayer Leverkusen on a permanent deal.
Born June 1st 1988 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico to Javier Hernndez Gutierrez, a former Mexican international striker, Chicharito as he is nicknamed signed his first professional contract at the age of fifteen for hometown side Guadalajara. Hernndez began his career at Chivas' lower division side Chivas Coras, he went on to play for the Chivas and score 26 goals in 64 appearances for the first team. Having scouted Javier prior to the 2010 World Cup, Alex Ferguson manager of Manchester United was concerned that Chicharito's performances at the tournament would raise his profile and value, so the Manchester side agreed a deal in April 2010 for the Mexican forward. As part of that deal United agreed to play Chivas Guadalajara in a friendly to open their new 45,000-capacity Estadio Omnilife stadium on 30 July 2010.
Wearing the number 11 shirt, Hernández represented Mexico at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup and then went on to be called into the national team in 2009, playing against Colombia and setting up Mexico's only goal in a 2-1 loss. Chicharito made his debut at the World Cup Finals of 2010, coming on as a substitute in the tournament's first match against hosts South Africa. He scored in his next game, coming off the bench again in a 2-0 win over France and being named as man of the match. In the knock-out stage against Argentina, Javier started his first World Cup game for Mexico and scored his second goal of the tournament, in their 3-1 loss to Argentina in the Round of Sixteen.
There certainly was a lot of interest in Hernández during and following the World Cup, but Ferguson had already got his man, Javier played well in pre-season scoring for Manchester United and he scored fortuitously against Chelsea in Manchester United Community Shield win of 2010, where he also elected to have his nickname Chicharito on the back of his United shirt rather than Hernández. The nickname means little pea, his father was known as Chicharito (pea) when he played, due to his green eyes, hence Hernández is little pea – Chicharito.
