In 1990, the team was playing in the 8th tier of German football. In the same year, millionaire Dietmar Hopp returned to the club of his youth with the goal of putting some of his money back into the club. By 1996, they were playing in the 5th tier of German football. They remained there for four years until they achieved promotion to the 4th tier in 2000. Just a season later, they emerged as champions to progress to the 3rd tier. A period of stagnation then occurred with the club finishing comfortably in the top half of the table but unable to win promotion to the Bundesliga II.



TSG 1899 Hoffenheim are a German football team who were founded in 1945. The club was brought together by the merger of gymnastics club Turnverein Hoffenheim and Fussballverein Hoffenheim. The team made no notable progress throughout its early years and remained as a lower league club.

In 2006, the team looked to progress by signing established Bundesliga stars. The gamble paid off as Hoffenheim were promoted to the 2nd tier in 2007 as runners up. A back to back promotion was then achieved as the club once again finished runners up, this time in the Bundesliga II.

2008/09 was the club's first ever in the German top division. They had an unbelievable start which saw them rise to the top of the table before the Christmas winter break. However, a number of injuries and suspensions saw them go 12 games without a victory. A late revival eventually saw them finish a credible 7th for their first season. The 09/10 campaign saw them stabilise after their prior late season slump with an 11th place finish.
