Lewis Holtby is a German footballer who plays as a midfielder for Tottenham Hotspur. Holtby was born in Erkelenz, Germany and started his youth career at Sparta Gerderath. He moved to Borussia Monchengladbach at the age of 11 and then moved to Alemannia Aachen in 2004 aged 13.
He played his first senior match of his career in 2007. He played just two seasons at the club before moving to FC Schalke 04 in 2009. He went through a series of loan moves to VfL Bochum and Mainz 05 in 2010 and 2011 to gain more match experience. His breakthrough at Schalke came in 2011 and 2012 where he played over 65 matches scoring over 12 goals. His prolific form attracted attention from other European clubs.
On the 28th of January 2013 he signed a four and a half year deal with English club Tottenham Hotspur. He was seen as injury cover for injured Brazilian central midfielder Sandro. Holtby has played through several Germany youth teams including the U-19, U-20 and U-21 sides and made his senior debut in 2010.
