Mats Hummels is a German footballer who plays for Borussia Dortmund and the Germany national football team. Hummels has developed a reputation for being one of the most feared defenders as he helped his club side Dortmund to win two consecutive Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012.
Born on the 16th of December 1988 in Bergisch Gladbach, West Germany Hummels began his career at Bayern Munich first entering the club aged six years old. He made his Bundesliga debut in May 2007 against Mainz 05 in a 5-2 win. This was his only appearance for the club where he signed for Borussia Dortmund on loan at first then permanent in February 2009 for Ã¢â€šÂ¬4 million.
In the 2010-11 season Hummels was the first choice centre back at the club along with Serbian Neven Subotic where they achieved the best defensive record in the 2010-11 Bundesliga season. Hummels performances that season displayed great quality in tackling, positioning and composure. He helped teh club to repeat the feat in the 2010-11 season helping to win the 2011-12 Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal title. In June 2012 Hummels signed a new contract which would keep him at the club until 2017. He helped the club to reach the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2013 where they played rivals Bayern Munich in the final where they lost 2-1.
Hummels played for Germany at the Under-20 and Under-21 levels before making his senior debut in May 2010 against Malta. Hummels played at the UEFA EURO 2012 tournament where he played 450 minutes in total at the cup. Along with Per Mertesacker, Benedikt Howedes and Heiko Westermann he is one of the first choice centre backs for Germany.
