The players pulled on the red and white shirts to win the championship in its inaugural season of 1963/1964 and the club since then they have won the domestic championship three times and the German Cup four times, including the domestic double in the 1977/1978 season.

The German club have also been relatively successful in the cup tournaments where they have won the DFB-Pokal on four occasions and were runners-up in the 1986 UEFA Cup.
