Lescott came through the youth ranks at Wolverhampton Wolves in England, making his debut as a 17 year old in 2000 against Sheffield Wednesday. He became a popular figure at the club, and by the 2002-2003 season was a regular starter for Wolves at centre-half. In 2004, he helped Wolves win the playoff final and gain promotion to the Premier League; however a knee injury made him miss the entire 2004-2005 season, in which Wolves were again relegated. Lescott made a name for himself at Everton and Manchester City.

The following season, Lescott was in imperious form in the Championship, winning the Wolves Player of the Year. With Wolves remaining in the second tier, Everton bought him for £5 million total in 2006. Lescott enjoyed three full seasons on Merseyside – initially at centre-half, but then at left-back from 2007. He became known as a goal-scoring defender – with 10 goals in the 2007-2008 season alone.

Lescott's rise continued in 2007 when he was selected for the England squad, making his debut against Estonia in UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying. He has since become a good squad member in the national side, representing England 14 times in total.

At the end of the 2009 season, Lescott moved from Goodison Park to Manchester City after a protracted transfer. Injuries and bad form plagued his first few years at the club, losing his first team place and seeing little game time at his preferred centre-half. The back end of the 2010-2011 season saw a revival for Lescott, winning back his place after good form and a suspension to Kolo Tour. He won his first major honour when City won the FA Cup at the end of the season. Lescott signed for West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2014.
