Luiz is a flamboyant and attack-minded centre-half for Paris Saint-Germain and the Brazilian national side. Luiz began his path towards professional football at his hometown club Sao Paulo, before moving to Vitoria in 2001 - aged fourteen. Originally a defensive midfielder, Luiz changed positions to central defence where he excelled and made his debut for the first team in 2006 - aged eighteen. He aided the club in promotion to the 2nd division that year, and was noticed by Jose Antonio Camacho at Benfica.
Initially moving on loan to the Portuguese club, Luiz grew into an important defender for the Encarnados. He showed his versatility by playing in all positions across the defence, and gained fans with his instinctive attacking and passing play from the backline. Luiz won his maiden league title with Benfica in 2010, and also won the League Cup three times whilst in Portugal. But in the January transfer window in 2011, Luiz was sought after by English side Chelsea.
After a protracted negotiation he signed with the Blues for 25 million pounds and was inserted into the first team. His first year with the club was a rollercoaster for the Brazilian, as initial success - including a goal in the league win against Manchester United - and plaudits for his style were undermined by his inconsistent performances as a defender. Luiz signed for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2014 for 50 million pounds.
Luiz is also an active player in the Brazilian national squad. He made his representative debut for the U20s at the 2007 U20s World Cup, and made his debut for the senior team in 2010 against the United States. David Luiz was a star for Brazil at the 2014 World Cup scoring an emphatic free kick against Colombia. He helped the side reach the semi-final. They played Germany in the semi-final losing 7-1.
