Mata is a Spanish attacking midfielder that plays on the left flank and through the centre for Manchester United in the English Premier League. Juan began his football career in Real Madrid's youth setup, where he excelled. Playing for the Real Madrid B team, Mata impressed through his performances scoring 10 times in 39 appearances for the reserve team. However, he was unable to crack into the first team squad, and due to a clause in his contract, moved to Valencia in 2007. Mata signed for Chelsea in 2011 where he helped the side to win the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League and 2011-12 Europe League.
Mata had four reasonably successful seasons at the Estadio Mestalla. He cemented a first-team slot in 2008, winning the Copa del Rey in his first season and impressing with his goal-scoring and goal-creating performances from midfield. The slight attacker became known as a supremely tactical player, with his dribbling and passing ability especially noted. He made 174 appearances for Valencia with 46 goals, before moving to Chelsea in England at the start of the 2011-2012 season for a £23.5 million transfer fee, taking the number 10. After being poorly selected by new manager Jose Mourinho, Juan Mata opted for a move to Manchester United in January 2014.
Mata has been involved in the Spanish national setup for most of his professional career also. He played representative football at U16, U17, U19, U20 and U21 levels before debuting for the senior side in 2009 against Turkey.
He was involved in the World Cup winning side in 2010, playing once in the finals. He also was a senior player involved in the 2011 U21 European Championship win, and will be a part of Spain's Euro 2012 title defence. The young winger has a vastly promising career ahead of him for Chelsea and for Spain.
