Wearing blue home shirt's to match those of Manchester City, their affiliated club as part of the City Football Group, the group also has teams in United States, Japan, Spain, and Uruguay as well as England and Australia. The away colours of red & white are a nod back to their Heart roots. They are based at the City Football Academy, based at Melbourne's La Trobe University.
Home matches in the A-League are played at AAMI Park, the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium which is a 30,050 capacity multi-use venue in Melbourne's City Centre also used by Melbourne Victory and Rugby League and Rugby Union sides the Melbourne Storm (NRL) and Melbourne Rebels (Super Rugby). City also have a senior women's team in the W-League, an affiliated youth team in the National Youth League and a NPL team in the National Premier Leagues.
In 2007 the idea of a second Melbourne franchise were coming together. The club were to be called Southern Cross FC and Melbourne City before Melbourne Heart was finalised in 2008. The club contested in the first ever Melbourne derby in October 2010. The four options for the clubs name were voted by fans. The options were Sporting Melbourne FC, Melburnians, Melbourne Revolution and Melbourne Heart FC. The club were called the Melbourne Heart in 2010. When playing as Melbourne Heart they had a red and white striped kit with red shorts and red socks which was designed to suit Melbourne's colours and flag.
Melbourne City Football Club, play in Melbourne, Victoria along with local rivals Melbourne Victory. Theirs was the first intra-city derby in the A-league until Western Sydney Wanderers joined the League in the 2012 to play against Sydney FC. Originially formed as Melbourne Heart, the club played under that name from 2010/11 rebranded in 2014 as part of their acquisition by the City Football Group.
