Lionel Andres Messi was born in Rosario, Argentina on June 24th 1987, he is only 5ft 6 inches tall but is regarded as one of the best young players in the world, possibly even Argentina's new Maradonna. Messi sometimes nicknamed the flea, started his career at Newell's Old Boys before moving to Europe and Spanish side Barcelona. Lionel Messi had a growth hormone deficiency but his parents couldn't pay for treatment in his home country, so they moved to Spain. Aged thirteen Messi excelled in a trial with Barca and they offered to pay for his treatment if he joined, he has been with the team since. October 2004 saw Messi's first team debut against RCD Espanyol, by May 2005 Messi scored his first goal for the 1st XI when he was only 17 years old.
Whilst he had the opportunity to his new residence Spain at international level he preferred to wait for the chance to play for Argentina, he made his first appearance for their under 20 team in June 2004.

Messi appeared at the 2010 World Cup wearing the number 10 shirt for the first time and was named captain of the side in Argentina's 2-0 win over Greece. He could not prevent his side losing 4-0 to Germany in the quarter-finals. At the 2011 Copa America Argentina were beaten by Uruguay in a penalty shoot-out. Winning several club and individual titles in his career Messi is yet to win a major title for his country.
