The team have never managed to qualify for the World Cup which can partly be explained due to only entering the qualifying stage on six occasions. These attempts were for the 1982, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Cups.
Mozambique are a national football team from Africa who played their first international in 1977 against Tanzania which they lost 2-1. Strangely enough, the team's biggest victory and defeat both arrived in the same year. On the 20th April 1980, they lost 6-0 to Zimbabwe. However, in August later that year, Mozambique managed to beat Lesotho 6-1.
Having appeared in the 1998 African Nations Cup, Mozambique failed to qualify for this competition for the subsequent editions but however have managed to qualify for the 2010 edition of the African Cup [...]
Mozambique's African Nations record is marginally better due to them having qualified for several tournaments. They attempted to qualify for the 1982 edition but failed. Nevertheless, they reached their first major tournament in 1986 but lost all three matches in the Group Stage to Egypt, Senegal and Ivory Coast. The team has made three more first round appearances since in 1996, 1998 and 2010.
Mozambique are currently ranked 72nd in the world. This is particularly close to their previous best effort of 66th back in 1997. It is also a great improvement since they were ranked at a record low 134th in 2005.
