AS Nancy 2022/23 Kits

AS Nancy Lorraine are a French football club who were founded in 1901 named as ‘FC Nancy’. The previously named side were relatively unsuccessful before folding in 1965 due to financial problems. Two years later, AS Nancy were formed as a successor to the previous team. They made an impact immediately as they finished Ligue 2 runners up in the 1969/70 season ensuring promotion to Ligue 1. They survived for three seasons with the peak being a 6th place finish in the 1972/3 campaign. However, the following season, they were relegated back to Ligue 2 after finishing in 18th place. This proved to be a blessing in disguise as the team won their first ever silverware in 1974/75 with the Ligue 2 title.

The team went from strength to strength and managed to win the French Cup in 1977/78. This also ensured European qualification to the Cup Winners Cup where they were eliminated in the quarter finals by Servette. During this period, the club also employed a young Michel Platini who began to make his name with the team. His presence helped establish Nancy as a top half team throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Nevertheless, the club went into a period of difficulty with relegation to Ligue 2 in 1987. For the next 10-15 years, they became a yo-yo club with Ligue 2 title wins in 1989/90 and 1997/98 shortly followed by relegation afterwards. Nevertheless, in 2004/05, the club won the Ligue Two title for the 4th time and have been in Ligue One ever since. In 2005/06, the club won the French League Cup for the first time in their history.

This ensured qualification for the UEFA Cup where they lost in the Round of 32 to Shakhtar Donetsk. They have since become one of the better teams in France with numerous good league finishes leading to European campaigns.
