AS Nancy Lorraine are a French football club who were founded in 1901 named as ‘FC Nancy’. The previously named side were relatively unsuccessful before folding in 1965 due to financial problems. They survived for three seasons with the peak being a 6th place finish in the 1972/3 campaign. However, the following season, they were relegated back to Ligue 2 after finishing in 18th place. This proved to be a blessing in disguise as the team won their first ever silverware in 1974/75 with the Ligue 2 title.

During this period, the club also employed a young Michel Platini who began to make his name with the team. His presence helped establish Nancy as a top half team throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s.
