The Jets were formed in 2000 joining the National Soccer League as Newcastle United. They are are only one of three teams to appear in the A-League. The club had financial issues in the 2010-2011 season resulting in the sale of the club. The club were renamed from Newcastle United to the Newcastle Jets to avoid confusion between Premier League side Newcastle United.
