The Jets were formed in 2000 joining the National Soccer League as Newcastle United. They are are only one of three teams to appear in the A-League. The club had financial issues in the 2010-2011 season resulting in the sale of the club. The club were renamed from Newcastle United to the Newcastle Jets to avoid confusion between Premier League side Newcastle United.

The Newcastle Jets are an Australian football club which play in the A-League. The club were founded in 2000 and play their home games in the 33,000 seater Hunter Stadium. The Jets have won one A-League title in 2008 beating arch rivals Central Coast Mariners 1-0 in the final. The Jets played in the AFC Champions League round of 16.

The club's logo of three F/A-18 Hornets which symbolises the Royal Australian Air Force based in Williamtown. The clubs 'Gold Era' was when the club wore gold shirts between 2005-2011.

The club's current colours feature blue and red like the NRL team the Newcastle Knights. In 2011 the club became cousins to NRL side the Newcastle Knights. The clubs marquee player in 2012 was Liverpool and England great Emile Heskey.
