The club remained in the Tercera division until 1970 when the club decided to revert back to regional football in 1970 where they remained until 1978. The return to the Tercera division in 1979 did not reap instant rewards. However, they finally achieved promotion to the Segunda B league in 1989 after becoming champions of the 4th tier. They remained competitive but uninspiring in the league for several years until they made their mark on the country in 1995 with an epic cup run that saw three La Liga teams knocked out. They narrowly survived relegation in 1998 before remarkably finishing 3rd the following campaign to earn promotion to La Liga.
