Nicolas Otamendi is an Argentine footballer who plays as a centre-back for Premier League giants Manchester City and the Argentina national team. Otamendi's transfer to Manchester City of which saw a deal in excess of £28.5 million stands the player as one of the most expensive defenders of all time which he hopes to justify through his old-fashioned style of defensive play which showcases his aggression, power, commitment, and firmness of tackle.
Born in Argentina's capital city of Buenos Aires, Otamendi began playing football for the youth team of Velez Sarsfield of which he developed through the club's nurturing and guidance over 12 years before making his first team appearance in May 2008 in a 2-1 win against Rosario Central in the Primera Division. The following season would see the 'beyond his years' central defender stand as Velez' leading defender and was rewarded for his stellar performances through being selected within the South American Team of the Year. Displaying his clear talents, Portuguese club Porto scouted Otamendi and subsequently approached his boyhood club over the availability of the player which saw a transfer of €4 million for the starlet being accepted. Otamendi continued to grow and develop over the next three seasons with his new club Porto of which saw two domestic league titles being held aloft, whilst attracting the attention from clubs all over Europe. With Valencia looking to build a solid foundation for their attacking team, the Spanish club offered Porto €12 million for Otamendi's services which was subsequently accepted and saw the player switch to the white shirt of Valencia. Playing only one season with the La Liga club which included 38 dazzling displays of defensive play which helped guide the club to their first Champions League qualification in four seasons would see the player included within the La Liga team of the year and also sparked interest from the high spending of Premier League club Manchester City. With the sky blue of City requiring a central defender to add to their squad's depth, an offer of £28.5 million was sent to Valencia who could not refuse such money and saw Otamendi arrive at the Etihad Stadium ready for the 2015/16 season.
Now a Manchester City player, Otamendi hopes to pose as a leader for the club alongside captain Vincent Kompany at the heart of City's strong defence.
Making his debut for the Argentina national side in 2009, Otamendi poses as one of the country's main defenders and leaders of which hope to achieve major honours in future tournaments with a highly talented squad.
