Ivan Rakitic is a Croatian footballer who plays for Barcelona and the Croatia national football team. Playing as an attacking midfielder Rakitic began his career at FC Basel in 2005 before moving to Schalke 04 in 2007 then Sevilla in 2011. Rakitic was signed by Barcelona in June 2014 and was seen as an immediate replacement for Cesc Fabregas who signed for Chelsea.
Ivan Rakitic was born on the 10th of March 1988 in Switzerland, Rakitc made his professional debut for FC Basel in 2005 and was named best young player in the 2006-07 Swiss Super League season as well as scoring the Swiss Goal of the Year in the same season. Rakitic signed for FC Schalke 04 in June 2007 and made his debut for the club in July 2007. In August 2007 he scored his first goal for the club against Stuttgart in a 2-2 draw. His form improved and he attracted interest from several clubs around Europe including Sevilla.
In January 2010 Rakitic signed for Spanish club Sevilla and made his debut for the club in February 2011 against Malaga CF. He established himself in the starting eleven of the side and at the start of the 2013-14 season he was made captain of the club. His form continued and he helped his side to win the 2013-14 UEFA Europa League where his side beat Benfica on penalties. Rakitic received the Man of the Match award in the final. He finished the 2013-14 season with an impressive 15 goals and 17 assists. In June 2014 he signed a five year deal with Spanish giants Barcelona and he was given the number four previously worn by Cesc Fabregas.
Born in Switzerland, Rakitic opted to play for Croatia at the senior level making his debut for the side in 2007. Rakitic has been a key player for Croatia ever since as he has played in the Euro 2008 and 2012 tournaments as well as the 2014 World Cup.
