Stade Rennais 2022/23 Kits

Stade Rennes are a French football club who were founded in 1901 by former students from the city. The team's early years saw them found the Brittany Football League in 1903 which they won on six occasions before leaving in 1929. Following several years of merely playing friendlies, the club joined the newly created French Professional Football League (known as Ligue 1 today) in 1933.

The team's first season saw an impressive 6th place finish although financial issues saw their fortunes plummet until the league was suspended for the Second World War in 1939. At this point, Stade Rennes reverted back to amateur status and played in various small leagues until 1945. A 5th place finish in the first season after the war was to be one of the club's high points until their relegation to Ligue 2 in the 1952/53 campaign. The club won their first silverware since moving to the league in 1956 after finishing as Ligue 2 champions in 1956. The team were also crowned champions of the second tier in 1983 as the club yo-yoed between divisions until a degree of stability in 1993. However, they did manage to win the French Cup in 1965 and 1971 during a small period of success for the club.

Since 1993, the club has continued to play in Ligue 1. Steady finishes throughout the 1990s laid a strong foundation for the club to promote talent through their youth academy. In 2005, Rennes achieved their best ever finish with 4th place that qualified them for the UEFA Cup. However, they were eliminated in the group stage during their first appearance in the second string European cup.

Further strong finishes in the league saw the team qualify for the UEFA Cup in 2007 and via the Intertoto Cup in 2008. Nevertheless, the team has been unable to get past the group stage in either of their European campaigns.
