Roque Santa Cruz is a Paraguayan forward who is currently playing for Malaga in La Liga. The striker played at Club Olimpia throughout the duration of his youth career before he broke through as a senior player for the club. In July 1998, at the age of 16, Santa Cruz made his debut for the Paraguayan club. His performances up front led the team to the Paraguayan championships in 1998 and 1999 which also saw him win the 1999 Player of the Year award. During his time at the club, Santa Cruz notched 13 league goals in 23 appearances.
Inevitably, the player's form caught the attention of one of Europe's biggest clubs in Bayern Munich. The German club signed him in time for the 1999/2000 campaign. However, Santa Cruz failed to live up to expectations in his first year with only five goals. Despite winning several accolades including the German League, Cup and UEFA Champions League, his time at Bayern was overshadowed by heavy forward competition and numerous injuries.
In 2007, Santa Cruz negotiated a move to Blackburn Rovers that saw the club pay £3.5 million for his services. The striker's Premier League career got off to the best possible start with a goal on his debut after coming on as a substitute. The forward spent two full seasons with Blackburn and scored the large majority of his goals in his first season. All in all, Santa Cruz scored 23 league goals in 58 appearances for the club. Following Manchester City's takeover, the club bid for Santa Cruz in the summer of 2009. Eventually, City managed to purchased the striker for £17.5 million. However, Santa Cruz has spent the majority of the 2009/10 season overcoming injury and being on the bench. He has only made 10 league appearances to date and scored two goals in those appearances.
