Santos Futebol Clube, popularly known as Santos, was founded on the 14th April 1912. Raimundo Marques, Mario Ferraz de Campos and Argemiro de Souza Junior were the people behind the idea of creating the football club. The stadium was inaugurated on the 12th October 1916 with the name Urbano Caldeira (a.k.a Vila Belmiro). Santos won their first tournament in 1935.

The world’s best ever player started his career at this club and spent most of his career at Santos FC. Edison Arantes do Nascimento started his career at the age of 15 with the club in the year 1956. He made 605 appearances for the club, scoring a total of 589 goals. This player is better known as Pele.. This player, along with players like Coutinho and Pepe, make up the Golden Age of Santos. Santos became extremely popular winning 6 Brazilian championships, the Copa Libertadores twice, and increasing its popularity on a worldwide scale playing in several exhibition matches.

The Golden age ended at the same time that Pele retired from Santos in 1974. Santos still won 3 championships but their popularity decreased drastically. The renaissance of Santos started when the President of the club Marcelo Teixeira spent millions on expensive players, changed the way of management, strengthened and gave chance to the upcoming youths and hired Emerson Leao as coach. This rehabilitation of Santos worked very well, with Santos reaping the fruit of their hard work in the recent years, developing talents like Robinho, Diego, Elano and Renato. All these players moved on to play in European football, increasing revenue for Santos FC. Santos still managed to win the national league in 2002 and 2004.
