Sheffield Wednesday did have a few home shirts that deviated from the traditional design, such as the white pinstriped, predominantly blue 2016/17 and the blue body-white sleeved 2017/18 home shirts. Other than that, almost always the club opted for that familiar white-and-blue vertical stripes, which underwent several design interpretations like the altering of the width profile, graphic-laden stripes, offset pinstripe borders and accented ones.

Sheffield Wednesday is one of the oldest football club in the world, having roots as far back as the 19th century when football was still considered a past time and not yet a full-blown professional sport. In fact, the association with the weekday Wednesday was due to the founding members’ having their half-day off-work on the said day.

Initially a cricket team named “The Wednesday Cricket Club” formed in 1820, the club decided to add a football team in 1867. Its full transition to football came in 1882 amidst the rising popularity of the sport and the breakaway of the cricket side due to financial disputes. The change of name from ‘The Wednesday’ to ‘Sheffield Wednesday’ occurred in 1929.

Sheffield Wednesday had won the English league on four occasions and the FA Cup three times. They had famous players such as Des Walker, Chris Woods and Chris Waddle pull on the teams kit.

Sheffield Wednesday play a heated rivalry with city rivals Sheffield United, which are nicknamed ‘Steel City derbies’ due to the steel industry the city of Sheffield is known for.
