Jay Spearing is a defensive midfielder for Bolton Wanderers. Born on 25 November 1988, Spearing was spotted from an early age by Liverpool and bought into their youth setup. Standing only 1.68m tall, he more than makes up for his lack of height through his determination and energy on the pitch.
His time in the Liverpool youth academy was interrupted by a broken leg, but finished in style when Spearing captained the U-18 Liverpool side to the FA Youth Cup in 2007. Due to his success at youth level Spearing was given the opportunity to train with the senior squad at the end of 2007. The following year he played an integral role in the Reserve team which won the FA Premier Reserve League title. Jay made his senior debut for his boyhood club in a substitute appearance during a Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven on December 9, 2008.
In March 2010, Spearing moved to championship side Leicester City on Loan. He made 9 appearances and picked up a goal in a match against Watford. Included in Liverpool's squad for the 2010/11 season Spearing played 800minutes that season and picked up the journalists' man of the match award on three separate occasions. The impressive performances on the park were enough to show Liverpool that Spearing would be vital to their future endeavours and so in May 2011 the club announced a contract extension. Spearing was selected for the England U-21 squad for the 2011 U21 European Championships.
