Sunderland is an English football club based in the city of the same name, located in Tyne and Wear county. Their home ground is the Stadium of Light, which has a capacity of 49,000. They are nicknamed the ‘Black Cats,’ and this was made official through a public vote in 2000. Sunderland is one of those teams that adopted red-and-white stripes as their bespoke home kit design.

Sunderland 23/24 Kits

While Sunderland bear the Nike logo on their kits, the team is not managed directly by the Swoosh brand. Instead they fall on Third Party-tier, meaning that their contract is handled by a third party (usually local retailers) on their behalf. In Sunderland’s case, that would be Just Sport Pro Club. Another detail about Third Party Nike teams is that they do not have bespoke designs on their kits. Spreadex, a sports spread betting and fixed odds betting online platform, acts as the principal sponsor for Sunderland, beginning at the 2022/23 season.

Sunderland Home 2021/22 KitSunderland had one of the most bespoke designs in their kits history with the 2021/22 Nike home shirt. The red vertical striping was the traditional pattern of any Sunderland home, while the white base brought back the vibe of the ’80s. In addition, the subtle graphic on the front derived from the crest, and the fade applied towards the top of the shirt took inspiration from the popular mid-90s away kit.

Its round neckline had a white collar whose height decreased from back to front. The Swoosh on the right chest was black while the Sunderland crest was fully-coloured. The corporate livery of Great Annual Savings Group appeared at the front centre and Utilita’s logo at the back below the jersey number. Black shorts and red socks completed the new home kit.

Sunderland AFC were formed in 1879 at a meeting of schoolteachers called by James Allan, at first the club were called Sunderland and District Teachers´ Association Football Club. After the first year non-teachers were allowed to join and the name was changed to Sunderland AFC. Sunderland play their home games at The Stadium of Light in Sunderland, having moved to the modern stadium from their old ground Roker Park.

Sunderland play their home games wearing a red and white striped shirt, but in 1882 they played in blue shirts, blue knickerbockers and a white stripe. Safe to say that they were very different to today´s kits.

Sunderland have the nickname of the Black Cats. This stems originally from a gun battery in 1805 on the River Wear, which was renamed the ´Black Cat´ battery after the men manning the station heard a mysterious meow from a wailing black cat. In 1905 the name was adopted by the football club.
