Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart signed for Tottenham Hotspur on the last day of the 2010 Premier League summer transfer window from Real Madrid. Rafael had played in Madrid since 2008, scoring eleven goals in fifty-eight appearances at the Bernabeu. Van der Vaart now plays for German club Hamburg SV where he signed for the club from Tottenhma Hotspur in 2012.
Van der Vaart joined Ajax Amsterdam when just ten years old, he made his senior debut at age seventeen and would spend nearly twelve years at the club before leaving for German side Hamburger SV in 2005, it would be from there that he joined Real in 2008.
An attacking midfielder van der Vaart quickly impressed in England, he scored three goals in his first four Premier League matches, received October player of the month and had a goal & an assist in his first two Champions League games in the Spurs shirt.
A Dutch international since 2001, van der Vaart has appeared in an Oranje kit at Euro 2004, Euro 2008, and the 2006 & 2010 World Cups. He would captain the Netherlands against England in August 2009 for the first time, in the absence of regular captain; Giovanni van Bronckhorst. In Holland's loss to Spain in the 2010 World Cup final, van der Vaart was captain for the final minutes of the game, when they lost 1-0 to an AndrÃƒÆ’Ã‚Â©s Iniesta goal, with van Bronckhorst having been substituted.
