Raphael Varane is a French footballer who plays for Real Madrid and the French national team. Varane primarily plays as a central defender where he began his career at Lens before moving to Real Madrid in 2011.
Varane was born on the 25th of April 1993 in Lille France and he began his footballing career at Lens in July 2002 where he spent time at the Centre de Preformation de Football in nearby Lievin and in the 2008-09 season along with Geoffrey Kondogbia and Thorgan Hazard he played in the club's under-16 team. He made his professional debut in October 2010 playing in a 2-0 win against Montpellier. In January 2011 he signed a two year extension at the club.
On the 22nd of June 2011 Varane confirmed that he had signed for Real Madrid for €10 million. He was assigned the number 19 shirt and he made his first competitive match for the club against Racing Santander in a 0-0 draw. In his next match Varane scored his first goal for Real Madrid against Rayo Vallecano in a 6-2 win. This made him the youngest foreign player to score for Real Madrid aged just 18 years and 152 days.
Varane has played for several youth French sides including the Under-18, Under-20 and Under-21 sides. Varane made his senior France debut against Georgia in a 3-1 win in March 2013. Varane looks to be an important player or both club and country in future seasons.
