Jan Vertonghen is a Belgian footballer who plays as a defender for Tottenham Hotspur. Vertonghen is a versatile player and can play ins several positions including left back, centre back and centre mid. He is known for his offensive prowess and powerful shooting ability.
Vertonghen began his career at Dutch giants Ajax where he succeeded to become captain of the side in 2012 and was named 2012 Ditch Footballer of the Year. Vertonghen played 247 matches for the club scoring an impressive 30 goals in six seasons. Vertonghen became a pivotal player in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 season where they won two Eredivisie titles.
He received the 2011-12 Ajax Player of the Year award and the 2007-08 Ajax Talent of the year award. He attracted a lot of attention from English clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
On the 12th of July 2012 Vertonghen had officially signed for Tottenham Hotspur and played his first game for the club against Brentford in a pre-season friendly. He scored his first league goal in a 1-0 win against Swansea City. Vertonghen is also a key player in the Belgian national side who also have world class players including Eden Hazard, Marouane Fellaini, Axel Witsel and Thomas Vermaelen.
