VFL Bochum Shirt on eBay

VFL Bochum is a German football club who play in the Bundesliga 2. The team were founded in 1848 as Turnverein zu Bochum before a reorganisation in 1904 saw them add 'gegrundet 48' to the end of their name. Nevertheless, the renaming wasn’t finished there and a merger in 1919 with Spiel und Sport 08 Bochum saw the club named Turn und Sportverein Bochum 1908. In 1948, the Nazi regime merged Bochurner Turnverein with Sportverein Germania Vorwarts Bochum 1906 and the current name to make VFL Bochum. Confused? You should be!

Despite being a lower table side for most of their time in the top division, Bochum developed a reputation for being hard to beat during their near twenty year consecutive stay in the Bundesliga. 1988 saw them reach the German Cup final but once again they were thwarted at the final hurdle, this time 1-0 by Eintracht Frankfurt. Following the club’s relegation in 1993, they have fluctuated between the top and second division.

Their best performance has been a fifth placed Bundesliga finish in 1998 which saw them enter the UEFA Cup competition for the first time. On this occasion, this reached the third round before elimination occurred at the hands of Ajax. Nevertheless, further yo-yoing between divisions looks set to continue for the near future.

The formation of the Bundesliga in 1963 saw Bochum placed in the third tier. They soon achieved promotion to the second tier with a league victory in 1965. The club’s rise continued in 1968 as they reached the final of the German Cup where they lost 4-1 to FC Koln. Nevertheless, a top flight appearance wasn’t far away the club joined the elite in the Bundesliga with promotion in 1971.
