World Cup 2022 – Against the backdrop of consecutive Euro appearances (2016 and 2021), the inclusion in the World Cup 2022 was arguably a continuation of that growing talent in Welsh football. After losing to Belgium in the very first qualification match, Wales did not look back and went on a winning streak (the last few matches being multiple play-off matches) en route to securing a slot to the tournament proper. Apart from the Belgium loss, the only bump on nation’s qualification road was the delay of the play-off finals against Ukraine due to the Russia-Ukraine crisis. Wales was slotted in group B alongside fellow UK country England. adidas provided Wales with a predominantly red home shirt that featured a dazzling zigzag design inspired by a fire-breathing dragon, and a white away kit with a dynamic collar pattern comprised of the national colours.
World Cup 1958 – Call it fate, but Wales’ participation in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden was an unexpected development. The nation came up short in the qualifying stage, placing second in Group 4 behind winners Czechoslovakia. However, Israel was ordered a qualification play-off against one of the second-placing European teams as it reached the final stage of the qualification without playing a single match (due to multiple withdrawals from their Africa/Asia opponents due to the Suez crisis). Wales beat Israel in both legs of this mandatory play-off, but even this was not originally meant for Wales. Belgium, who was actually drawn first, refused to participate. The second leg was an eventful one for then Wales Manager Jimmy Murphy (also the assistant manager of Manchester United at that time), as the match was scheduled on the same day as the European Cup quarter-final game between Manchester United and Red Star Belgrade. Choosing to lead his country, Murphy missed the latter (and consequently the Munich Air Disaster). Moving on to the World Cup proper, Wales drew all of their group games before winning the tie-breaking match against Hungary, a 1954 World Cup finalists. They start Euro 2020 in Group A together with Turkey, Italy, and Switzerland. Their kit manufacturer is adidas and as such, their red home kit share some trademark features from the brand such as the yellow shoulder stripes, broad v-neck collar, and broad yellow sleeve cuffs that have a central white horizontal stripe flanked by green and red ones.
